Chapter 8: Transmission

Covers clutch pedal, manual transmission (5M/T) and transfer case, transmission removal, and the full automatic transmission (A/T) system — specifications, electronics, shift control/cabling, removal, and cooler.

Our truck is a 4A30 DOHC turbo, 3A/T automatic, 4WD. Sections 77-87 (the A/T system) apply directly to our vehicle and get the highest care in this chapter — read the Turbo/DOHC-specific rows and callouts, not the Non-Turbo/SOHC/M/T ones. Sections 71 (clutch), 74’s Transmission Shifter Control portion, and 75 (M/T removal) do not apply to our truck at all (no clutch, no manual gearbox); section 72’s manual-transmission-oil portion likewise doesn’t apply, though its Transfer Case oil content does. Sections 73 and 76 (speedometer cable / transfer case removal) apply directly since the transfer case is shared 4WD hardware regardless of transmission type.

(verify printed p.165-167) — the chapter’s own internal divider page (printed p.165) headers itself “Chapter 7: Transmission” and lists these same 17 topics numbered 88-104, while the book’s front Contents pages (printed p.5-6 of the scan) list this chapter as “Chapter 8: Transmission” numbered 71-87 — the numbering used for these filenames. This chapter-number/item-number mismatch is a genuine inconsistency in the source scan (not resolved by this pass) and should be checked against a clean copy before treating either numbering as authoritative outside this site.
