Chapter 12: Steering System

Covers steering-system alignment data and special tools, the steering wheel/column assembly (including SRS airbag service), key lock cylinder replacement, manual and power steering rack & pinion overhaul, the power steering pump and hose routing, and a torque unit conversion chart. Torque specs are metric N·m with kgf·m in parentheses, as printed.

Our truck is the 4A30 DOHC turbo, 3A/T automatic, 4WD (VR-II) configuration. Both a manual steering rack and a power steering rack are documented in this chapter as separate systems — it is not confirmed from these source pages, or elsewhere in the digitized manual set, which one our truck actually has. Verify by physical inspection (power steering pump/belt/reservoir present on the engine) or by cross-checking the EPC parts catalog (type code MKPF3) before relying on either the manual or power steering rack procedure.

  1. Data & Tools — alignment specs (toe-in/camber/caster/side slip, cross-confirmed against Chapter 10), steering/alignment special tool part numbers.
  2. Steering Wheel Column — SRS airbag safety warning, wheel/column components, airbag-equipped wheel removal, lock body/bracket shaft components.
  3. Key Lock Cylinder Lock Replacement — shear-head special bolt removal technique for the steering lock.
  4. Manual Steering Rack & Pinion Assembly: Overhaul — removal, disassembly, pinion runout/shim selection, tie rod length and preload reassembly spec.
  5. Power Steering Rack & Pinion Assembly — removal, 34-item repair kit, disassembly, mounting grommet clearance, oil seal/bearing reassembly, preload inspection.
  6. Power Steering Pump — belt, hose, sensor, and bracket components.
  7. Power Steering Hose Routing — DOHC M/T and DOHC M/T Late Model line routing (no A/T-specific variant recovered from OCR — flagged).
  8. Torque Conversion Chart — lb·in / lb·ft / kg·cm / kg·m / N·cm / N·m unit conversion factors.

Pages not carrying separate procedural content: printed p.285 (chapter title/section listing, reproduced in this index), p.286 (blank), p.306 (blank), p.307 (publisher back-matter/advertisement, not manual content).

OCR quality summary — flagged specs requiring verification against the printed page

  • p.287-288 — tool-name-to-part-number pairing for both special-tool tables (scrambled column layout); p.288’s tool set (rear axle bearing remover, pinion height gage, etc.) reads more like driveline/axle tooling than steering tooling.
  • p.289 — four torque values present but not mapped to specific fasteners on the steering wheel/column diagram.
  • p.293 — four torque values on the manual rack removal diagram not mapped to specific fasteners.
  • p.294 — three torque values on the manual rack disassembly diagram not mapped to specific fasteners.
  • p.295 — shim-selection tool part number illegible (garbled in scan).
  • p.296 — yoke plug torque-then-angle step direction (tighten further vs. back off 30°) not stated; upper end of the second pinion-preload degree range (“90°1”) illegible.
  • p.297 — four torque values on the power steering rack removal diagram not mapped to specific fasteners.
  • p.298 — items 14 and 26 in the 34-item repair kit list both transcribed as “Pinion & Valve Assembly” (likely a duplicate OCR read of two distinct parts); five torque values not mapped to specific fasteners.
  • p.301 — two tool part numbers (“MB391202”/“MB531417”) break from the MB99xxxx pattern used everywhere else in this chapter — likely OCR digit errors, plausibly MB991202/MB991417, not confirmed.
  • p.302 — three tool part numbers illegible or pattern-breaking in the scan (“MB930560”, “MB950842”, and one entirely unread for the pinion-teeth oil seal).
  • p.303 — rack plug torque printed as “T=69 (0.7)” (a likely dropped decimal — cross-referenced against the matching manual-steering value on p.296, which reads correctly as 6.9 N·m/0.7 kgf·m — not confirmed against the physical page); same “90°1” illegible degree-range issue as p.296.
  • p.304 — no confirmed A/T-specific hose routing variant recovered (only “DOHC M/T” and “DOHC M/T Late Model” labels found, but our truck is 3A/T); odd/even component-to-variant split is a reconstruction; torque values on both the pump and hose-routing halves of the page not mapped to specific fasteners.
  • Chapter-wide: manual vs. power steering — which system equips our truck is not established anywhere in this chapter or the rest of the digitized manual set.

No numeric spec was invented anywhere in this chapter — where a value’s fastener/part assignment was unclear, the value is still listed but flagged. The Torque Conversion Chart is the one page in this chapter where every value checked out clean against known conversion constants.
