Chapter 6: Engine Cooling System

Covers coolant type/capacity, radiator cap and coolant percentage specs, the coolant flushing/replacement procedure, cooling fan & belt system removal, thermostat service and test limits, water pump service, water hose routing (SOHC vs. DOHC turbo), and radiator assembly removal.

Our truck is the 4A30 DOHC turbo (VR grade), 3A/T automatic, 4WD — sections with SOHC/DOHC-specific parts or specs call out which side applies.

  1. Coolant & Capacities — coolant type, M/T vs A/T capacity (3L (3.17 US qt) / 4L (4.23 US qt) — verify pairing), coolant percentage measurement procedure.
  2. Radiator Cap & Coolant — radiator cap relief pressure, coolant percentage ratio, thermostat operating range summary.
  3. Coolant Replacement — complete system flushing procedure, cylinder block drain plug locations and torque.
  4. Cooling Fan & Belt System — fan/clutch/belt removal order; torque-to-component mapping unconfirmed (flagged).
  5. Thermostat — replacement procedure, opening test, opening lift measurement.
  6. Water Pump — removal, gasket sealant bead spec, attachment torque, replacement interval.
  7. Water Hose Routing SOHC DOHC — full hose/pipe parts list with SOHC/DOHC tagging; torque-to-item mapping largely unconfirmed (flagged, most garbled page in the chapter).
  8. Radiator Assembly — pre-removal prep and component removal order; no torque specs recovered from this page.

Source numbering note

(verified against scan p.147, 2026-08-30) — the manual’s front Contents pages number this chapter’s sections 58-65 (Coolant & Capacities … Radiator Assembly), which is what the filenames above follow per assignment. However, the chapter-opener page (printed p.147) internally lists the identical eight section titles as 66-73 (“66. Coolant & Capacities” through “73. Radiator Assembly”) — confirmed visually on the scan. This is an inconsistency in the source document itself, not an OCR artifact. Noting for whoever reconciles the full-manual TOC.
