Chapter 7: Engine Electrical Components
Covers the starter, alternator, ignition coil/spark plugs, crankshaft position sensor (distributor), and knock sensor. Most sections apply to both SOHC (XR grade) and DOHC Turbo (VR grade, our truck) engines with shared or near-identical torque specs; the knock sensor is DOHC-only.
(verify printed p.155) — the front-of-manual Contents section (printed p.7-9 of this scan) numbers this chapter’s sections 66-70 (Starter Motor through Knock Sensor), which is the numbering used for these filenames. The chapter’s own opening page (printed p.155) instead numbers the same five sections 71-75. This is a numbering inconsistency in the source document itself (not an OCR error we can resolve) — both numbering schemes point to the same five sections in the same order, but confirm against the printed manual if the section number itself is ever cited elsewhere.
Printed p.164 is a blank “Notes” page in the source scan — no content to transcribe.
- Starter Motor — removal/installation order, DOHC-specific radiator overflow tank step, torque values (flagged mapping).
- Alternator — replacement procedure, charging circuit test (voltage regulator output range table), oscilloscope waveform test setup.
- Ignition Coil & Spark Plugs (DOHC & SOHC) — secondary/single coil ohm tests, SOHC-only spark plug wire test, spark plug gap table (flagged manufacturer/gap pairing).
- Crankshaft Position Sensor (Distributor) (DOHC & SOHC) — removal/installation, TDC and re-mark procedure, DOHC-labeled alignment marks, shared torque spec.
- Knock Sensor (DOHC) — removal order, special tool MD998773, torque values (flagged mapping).
