Starter Motor

Applies to both SOHC and DOHC engines; the DOHC Turbo (our truck) has one extra pre-removal step below.

Removal notes

  • DOHC Turbo models: the radiator overflow tank must be removed first, before starting the removal procedure.

Removal & installation

  1. Remove the intercooler bracket (DOHC only).
  2. Remove harness connections from the starter.
  3. Remove the two (2) starter attachment bolts and remove the starter.
  4. Install in reverse order.

Torque specifications

Torque calloutN·m (kgf·m)Imperial
T=14(1.4)124 in-lb
T=30(3.1)22 ft-lb
T=30(3.1)22 ft-lb

(verify printed p.157) — three torque callouts are legible on the source diagram, but the leader lines tying them to specific fasteners did not survive OCR as text. The two identical T=30 (3.1) values most likely correspond to the two starter attachment bolts called out in step 3 (same spec, one for each bolt), and T=14 (1.4) most likely corresponds to a harness terminal nut (e.g. the B-terminal battery cable connection) rather than a structural bolt — but this attribution is not confirmed and should not be relied on without checking the printed diagram.
