LSD Components

Covers the limited-slip differential (LSD) clutch pack, fitted to LSD-equipped rear differential carriers. See Differential Carrier Overhaul for the full carrier disassembly/assembly procedure — this page details the LSD-specific clutch pack only.

Note: see parts catalogue for clutch disk & shim options.

LSD carrier clutch pack — components

  1. Screw
  2. Differential Case “A”
  3. Spring Plate
  4. Friction Plate
  5. Friction Disk
  6. Friction Plate
  7. Friction Disk
  8. Friction Plate
  9. Pressure Ring
  10. Side Gear
  11. Pinion Gear
  12. Pinion Shaft
  13. Pressure Ring
  14. Friction Plate
  15. Friction Disk
  16. Friction Plate
  17. Friction Disk
  18. Friction Plate
  19. Spring Plate
  20. Differential Case “B”

The clutch pack is symmetric about the side gears/pinion gears (items 10-12): a Friction Plate/Friction Disk stack on each side (items 4-9 and 13-19) sandwiched between the two differential case halves (“A” and “B”).

LSD torque engagement test

Reproduced from Differential Carrier Overhaul (printed p.242) since it is LSD-specific data:

  1. Use a torque wrench as shown and test for engagement torque. Once the plates engage, check reading.
Clutch plate conditionEngagement reading
New clutch plates29–44 Nm (21–32 ft-lb)
Previously-used plates10–44 Nm (7.4–32 ft-lb)

Note: if clutch plates fail this test, replace and retest. See parts catalogue for thickness options.

Friction plate / friction disk distortion limit

Limit: 0.08 mm (0.003 in) — see Rear Axel Data & Tools.

Note: printed p.250 (the page following this one) contained no recoverable content — it appears to be a blank/end-of-chapter page in the scan.
