Engine Lubrication & Oil Filter System

Oil capacity

EngineFull capacityOil filter (included in full capacity above)
SOHC3.5 Liter (3.70 qt)0.2 Liter (0.21 qt)
DOHC3.6 Liter (3.80 qt)0.1 Liter (0.11 qt)
  • Oil type: SAE 30W or multi-grade SAE 10W-40
  • Tool: oil filter socket, part MB991396

Oil and filter change procedure

  1. Remove the drain plug and drain the oil, as shown at the drain plug location.
  2. Replace the drain plug gasket.

Note: use the correct drain plug gasket facing as shown in the diagram — improper gasket installation can cause oil leakage.

  1. Remove the oil filter using tool MB991396 and discard.
  2. Coat the new oil filter’s O-ring with SAE 30W engine oil.
  3. Add approximately 0.1 Liter (0.11 qt) of engine oil to prime the filter before installation.
  4. Install the filter.
  5. Install the drain plug and fill to the capacity stated for the vehicle above.

Torque values

FastenerTorque
Drain plug39 N·m (4.0 kgf·m; 29 ft-lb) — matches Section 20 drain plug torque

DOHC oil cooler

DOHC Turbo-only component — no SOHC equivalent in this chapter.

Removal, pre-steps

  • Drain coolant system.
  • Remove oil filter.

Removal

  1. Remove eye bolt.
  2. Disconnect water hose.
  3. Remove oil cooler.
  4. Remove O-ring and discard — replace with new O-ring.
  5. Install in reverse order.

Note: use the alignment notch on the engine block to properly seat the oil cooler. The notch prevents lateral movement — if the cooler is not located on the notch as shown, oil leakage may occur.
