Oil Pan Removal

Applies to SOHC and DOHC unless noted.

Preliminary steps

  1. Remove oil level stick and guide tube.
  2. Remove under-engine cover.
  3. Remove radiator shroud cover.

Items removed for pan access

  • Drain engine oil.
  • Oil return hose (DOHC Turbo only).
  • Drain plug.
  • Drain plug gasket — replace.
  • Vacuum actuator.
  • Bell housing cover.
  • Oil pan retaining bolts.
  • Oil screen retaining bolts.
  • Oil pan.
  • Oil pan gasket — replace.
  • Oil screen.
  • Gasket — replace.

Note: all gaskets must be replaced once removed. Never reuse gaskets.

Torque values

FastenerTorque
Drain plug39 N·m (4.0 kgf·m; 29 ft-lb) — matches Section 24 drain plug torque
Bell housing cover bolt, M/T5.9 N·m (0.6 kgf·m; 52 in-lb)
Bell housing cover bolt, A/T9.8 N·m (1.0 kgf·m; 87 in-lb)

(verify printed p.47) — additional torque callouts on the diagram, labeled generally “SOHC-DOHC,” could not be confidently matched to specific fasteners: 17 N·m (1.7 kgf·m; 150 in-lb), 9.8–12 N·m (1.0–1.2 kgf·m; 87–106 in-lb) (appears twice), 14 N·m (1.4 kgf·m; 124 in-lb), and 19 N·m (1.9 kgf·m; 168 in-lb). Likely candidates are the oil pan retaining bolts and oil screen retaining bolts, but confirm against the printed diagram before use.
