Timing Belt Inspection

Note: the Chapter 2 contents list titles this section “Timing Belt Inspection SOHC,” but the source page itself shows generic belt-damage photos/illustrations with no SOHC/DOHC split in the text — the inspection criteria below appear to apply to both engines’ timing belts.

Damage to inspect for

Replace the timing belt if it shows any of the following:

  • Splitting
  • Cracking (surface or edge)
  • Layer separation
  • Belt oil-soaked
  • Internal separation
  • Uneven wear
  • Lobe cracking
  • Missing lobes (teeth)

Replacement intervals

  • Replace all timing belts at 80,000km (49,710mi).
  • If the water pump fails below 80,000km (49,710mi), replace the timing belt at the same time.
