Rear Driveline Inspection

Driveshaft backlash inspection

1. Raise vehicle and support.
2. Clean yoke surfaces and make an alignment mark pattern as shown.
3. Turn shaft in a lower and upper rotation, measuring engagement travel.

Backlash limit of engagement: 5 mm (0.197 in).

Note: for out-of-specification run out results, see the following pages for bearing replacement.

Differential oil level

4. Remove fill plug. Oil level must be within 8 mm (0.315 in) of the lower section of the fill plug. Add as required.

8 mm (0.315 in) limit. Capacity: 1.04 Liters (1.10 US qt).

Rear axle run out limit

5. Jack rear of vehicle and remove tire and brake hardware.
6. Attach a dial gauge as shown.
7. Rotate assembly and test for run out.

Limit: 0.8 mm (0.031 in).

Note: if over limit, replace wheel bearing and retest.
